James co-founded Worldview Technology Partners in 1996
and has been a venture capitalist since 1991.
He invests primarily in early stage semiconductor, component, and
communications startups. James pioneered
the model of integrating business development with venture capital. From his start as a venture capitalist,
James believed that it was important for venture capitalists to roll up their
sleeves and help entrepreneurs build great companies. James felt that in
order to build great companies he needed to do more than actively participate
on the Board. James determined to contribute more directly to their success
by dedicating resources to help portfolio companies engage customers and
partners, on a global basis, in early stages of formation. In the past 15 years he has successfully
led two venture capital organizations in developing and executing on this
concept, and today he is still the driving force behind this value added
model that sets Worldview apart.
James has led or co-led successful investments into companies
such as AFC, C- Cube, Catena Networks, CIENA, CommQuest,
Corvis, Cosine, MMC, NeoMagic,
NVIDIA, Oplink, Silicon Spice, Tellium
and Tivoli.
He currently severs on the Board of Directors of 3ParData, Commverge Solutions, Luxim, Miradia, Mistletoe Technologies, Stretch, and Tensilica.
Prior to co-founding Worldview in 1996, James was a fund manager at JAFCO
where he sponsored investments and created Asian business development
strategies for U. S.
technology companies. Prior to JAFCO, James held engineering and marketing
positions at Sony and IBM.
James holds a B.S. degree in systems design engineering from the University of Waterloo
in Ontario, Canada. He is fluent in Mandarin,
Japanese and English.
