Worldview Technology Partners ranked as one of top VC
firms based on value of IPO offerings in second half of 2000.
Firm's telecom and Internet infrastructure
investment strategy produces five strong IPOs from July - November 2000
PALO ALTO, Calif. - December 18, 2000 - Worldview
Technology Partners, a leading venture capital firm, helped five IT companies
go public over the last six months and raise $1.73 billion in their IPOs,
according to The Daily Deal, a New York investment newspaper.
As a result, Palo Alto-based Worldview Technology, a
specialist in communications and Internet infrastructure investment, ranked
second in the value of the stock of portfolio companies initially sold to the
public in a Daily Deal ranking based on the six month-period ended December 1.
This was reported this month in a chart compiled from information provided by
Venture Economics/Thomson Financial and Securities Data Corp. and called
"Leading IPO Investors."
Kleiner Perkins Caufield Byers captured the No. 1
ranking in this period. Worldview-backed companies included in The Daily Deal
ranking included CoSine Communication Inc. (Nasdaq: COSN), Corvis Corporation
(Nasdaq: CORV) and Oplink Communications (Nasdaq: OPLK), three of the most
successful IPOs of the year.
Worldview Technology's ranking is based on the
number and share prices cited in the offering prospectuses of five companies.
Corvis, a fiber optics equipment manufacturer that went public last July with
an offering value at $1.14 billion, was among the largest IPOs of the year.
Worldview attributes its success to a disciplined
investment strategy focused on communications infrastructure, one leveraging
growing market demand for networking components, equipment and services.
While many venture capitalists had been focused on dot.coms, Worldview has
built one of the largest VC portfolios concentrated almost exclusively on
communications and Internet infrastructure companies.
"By focusing our investment efforts on the
expanding telecom market specifically, we are in an excellent position to
offer our portfolio companies tremendous value," said James Wei, a
Worldview co-founder and general partner. "That is directly related to
the great dividends these companies have generated."
"Worldview has been instrumental in helping
bring Oplink to where we are today," said Joe Lui, founder and CEO of
Oplink Communications. "The partners' expertise in the optics market,
coupled with their support of our key business decisions, contributed greatly
to our company momentum and our successful IPO."
Worldview Technology, which today has $750 million
under management and is raising its fourth fund, has more than 70 companies
in its portfolio. The firm's investment team blends operating and venture
investing experience to help portfolio companies succeed in a highly
competitive environment.
Worldview, which is widely recognized as a model of
the next-generation venture capital firm, has built a differentiated model in
the highly competitive venture capital community. Since its inception in
1996, Worldview has combined a focused communications investment strategy
with value-added global services. Worldview has eight full-time business
development specialists in Singapore
and Tokyo who
concentrate on helping portfolio companies access customers, partners and
suppliers. The firm also plans to expand this model in Europe.
The strategy has helped elevate Worldview Technology to the ranks of premier
venture capital firms specializing in communications infrastructure.
Worldview general partners have extensive experience
as successful entrepreneurs, venture investors and senior executives at
Fortune 100 companies, including Oracle, 3Com and Hewlett-Packard. The firm
brings together an extensive network of CEOs, entrepreneurs, venture
capitalists and institutional and corporate investors to add value in
numerous ways to portfolio companies, maximizing their prospects for growth
and prosperity.
