Worldview helps Cyras launch a global expansion campaign
Cyras Communications, a Fremont, California-based start-up, developed a next generation add/drop multiplexer that featured data-aware SONET devices. This breakthrough platform allowed carriers to upgrade their existing SONET infrastructure to handle rapid growth of data traffic on their networks.

Worldview invested in Cyras during the company’s product development stage, and immediately began to research opportunities in Asia. Worldview met with top-tier carriers in Singapore, China, Taiwan, Korea and Japan, organizing high-level meetings between carrier senior management and Cyras’ VP of Marketing and VP of Sales. Worldview facilitated Cyras’ participation in CommunicAsia2001 where the company met with over ten Asian carriers in a three day period. Based on this experience, Worldview and Cyras determined that the most promising initial market was Japan.

Worldview provides customer and partner introductions in Japan
Worldview identified an opportunity with eAccess, a new, competitive Japanese carrier that was building a next generation SONET infrastructure. Worldview immediately recognized the magnitude of the opportunity and presented Cyras’ technology, features and economics to eAccess. Cyras’ offering was received with a high level of interest. Worldview then hosted selected Cyras sales personnel and engineers in Japan, and the sales process began. It was apparent that the customer was highly motivated and that Cyras offered a compelling solution.

eAccess was so impressed with Cyras’ technology that they issued a purchase order for approximately $50 million just prior to Cyras’ acquisition by Ciena.

Keeping the customer on board through the transition
Cyras was acquired by Ciena in 2001 for 27 million shares of Ciena common stock worth $2.6 billion [need numbers from David S], representing an extremely successful exit for the portfolio. However the Worldview business development team in Tokyo was concerned about the transition’s impact on eAccess. Worldview proactively met with Ciena Japan to brief them on the customer relationship, playing a key role in keeping the customer happy during the transition.
